Microsoft Dynamics "Royal Rumble"

Author: Ron

There are currently three Microsoft Dynamics products that can be considered some of the best ERP for manufacturing. The Microsoft ERP offerings include Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains (GP), Microsoft Dynamics Navision (NAV), and Microsoft Dynamics Axapta (AX). The Microsoft Dynamics ERP all contain financial management, human resource management, supply chain management and IT management features. Despite their similarities, the Microsoft Dynamics products are built for different sized organizations and different vertical industries.

Microsoft Dynamics GP

Microsoft Dynamics GP is an out-of the-box ERP solution designed for small to medium-sized organizations and leverages very quick deployment speeds. However, Microsoft Dynamics GP does not contain all of the pieces to satisfy a larger businesses manufacturing needs. Even with strong core features such as HR, supply chain and financial management, Microsoft Dynamics GP still has unfocused manufacturing features that are unfocused and not suitable to meet the complex demands of most manufacturing verticals.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV

Microsoft Dynamics NAV is the most popular product in the Microsoft Dynamics line, and it provides a solid manufacturing and distribution solution. The key strength of the Microsoft Dynamics product is its high configurability and customization potential. This lets the product be easily fitted to numerous verticals and sub-verticals within an industry. Additionally, Microsoft Dynamics GP has a strong financial backbone that encompasses the entire supply chain, and utilizes advanced reporting and analytical capabilities.

Although Microsoft Dynamics NAV offers highly configurable solution, the Microsoft Dynamics product does not support the needs of process manufacturing. The Microsoft Dynamics ERP system can seem clunky at times, but even though the base application is not as capable as Dynamics AX, it's still a good application for discrete manufacturers.

Microsoft Dynamics AX

Microsoft Dynamics AX is aimed towards medium-sized to large enterprises that have several divisions or global operations, and the Dynamics ERP contains many features offered in larger enterprise solutions. Microsoft Dynamics AX has extended functionality to include process manufacturing. Product configuration is one of the key features of this solution, and it allows users to create complex products with various options and features to allow for up-to-the minute configuration.

Microsoft Dynamics AX provides a complete manufacturing ERP solution that addresses all forms of manufacturing, but with the advanced capabilities comes a more complex system with a heftier price tag.
